Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

The goal of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is to create a rich and meaningful life while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it. ACT is an action-oriented approach that utilizes mindfulness to help people alleviate distress and suffering while developing emotional and psychological flexibility. Our therapists at Ott Counseling help clients learn to stop avoiding, denying, and struggling with their inner emotions and, instead, accept that these deeper feelings are appropriate responses to certain situations that should not prevent them from moving forward in their lives. ACT is beneficial for a range of health problems including managing chronic pain, addictions, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and rigidity in thinking.

What is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is rooted in the idea that experiencing pain is part of being human - but we don't have to stay stuck in that pain. ACT can help you develop skills to be more present, & respond to difficult emotions in a healthy way. Rather than avoiding or fighting uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, ACT can help you accept & process them, not have them control you. At Ott Counseling, we use ACT to support clients who may be navigating anxiety, depression, chronic pain, OCD, trauma, or other life transitions. Sometimes, therapy isn't about feeling better right away - It's about developing skills that will help you live a meaningful & intentional life.

Is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Right For Me?

Here are a few of the questions that we frequently get asked about Acceptance & Commitment therapy. Curious if this therapy might be helpful for you? Always feel free to contact us with additional questions or to schedule an appointment with one of our licensed therapists.

  • What exactly is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

ACT is a type of talking therapy that can help you become more present in your life, accept what is out of your control, and take action toward what truly matters to you. It’s about learning to live meaningfully, even when things feel difficult.

  • How is ACT different from other types of therapy?

Unlike therapies that focus on changing your thoughts or memories, ACT can teach you to recognize and accept your thoughts and feelings - without letting them completely run the show. It also emphasizes mindfulness and values-based action to guide your decisions.

  • What kinds of mental health struggles can ACT help with?

ACT is often a therapy used to treat emotional rigidity, anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, & stress. It's also a very useful therapy for those who feel stuck or disconnected from their values or goals.

  • Is ACT good for people who’ve been in therapy before without success?

Many people can find ACT helpful after trying other approaches. This therapy can offer a fresh perspective - especially if you’ve felt like you were constantly battling your thoughts or feelings without relief from medication or other therapies.

  • How long does ACT typically take to show results?

Seeing & feeling results ultimately depends on your goals and what you’re working through. Some people notice a shift in just a few sessions, and for others it can be a tool used through longer term therapy. One of the benefits that we love about ACT is that it is designed to build skills that you can continue to use long after therapy ends.

  • Will I have to talk about my past in detail with ACT?

Only if it’s helpful for your own progress. ACT is more focused on what’s happening now and where you want to go, rather than digging deeply into the past. This can make it an attractive therapy option for individuals who may have a painful past or who have significant difficulty talking about their past.

  • Can ACT be helpful for physical symptoms like chronic pain?

Yes. ACT has been shown to help people manage chronic pain by shifting their relationship with their own discomfort, improving emotional flexibility, and improving overall quality of life.

  • Is ACT suitable for teens or children?

Yes! ACT can be adapted for teens and older children, especially those dealing with anxiety, rigid thinking, or challenges managing their own emotions. Your therapist can guide whether it's the right fit for your child’s age and needs, or you can always call us if you're looking to learn more about this therapy option.

  • How do I know if ACT is the right therapy for me?

That is always what our first few sessions will help explore! We’ll talk about your goals, challenges, and what’s been helpful or unhelpful in the past - We always tailor our therapeutic approach from there. We are not a one-size-fits-all practice, and often use multiple different therapies to customize our treatment for each and every patient. ACT is one tool that helps us better support you in your journey!

  • Where do you offer acceptance and commitment therapy sessions?

Ott counseling provides both in-person sessions for those in Western NY right in our Buffalo office, as well as virtual sessions for anyone in the state of New York.

Ott Counseling has, without mincing words, put in more time, effort, and energy into my mental health above and beyond any other therapist I have seen in decades. Patient, evidence-based, and extremely up-to-date on the latest therapy modalities and research. Would, quite literally, not be here to write this review had it not been for this practice and the people in it.

XXXX just loved [Ott Counseling]. She was super nervous all day yesterday and told us it would be a one and done thing. She said (before the appointment) even if she ever did do it again, it would be virtual. Well, she came out of the room and said she WOULD be doing it again, AND she wanted to do it in person lol. She was bummed she has to wait so long until her next appointment. It sounds like she felt very comfortable opening up to [her].
