Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on exploring relationships among a person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors. During CBT a therapist will actively work with a person to uncover unhealthy patterns of thought and how they may be causing self-destructive behaviors and beliefs. CBT addresses anxiety disorders, panic, depression, obsessive compulsive behaviors, intrusive thinking, and helps clients change their thoughts and behaviors to improve their overall life satisfaction and functioning.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used, evidence-based form of therapy that helps people recognize how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected. When we learn to identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns, we can make meaningful changes in our behavior, how we feel, and how we respond to everyday challenges. At Ott Counseling, our therapists work collaboratively with clients to explore thinking patterns and develop practical tools for coping and overcoming challenges. Over time, CBT helps people gain insight, break free from unhelpful cycles, and improve their overall well-being and quality of life.

Is CBT Right For Me?
Here are a few of the questions that we frequently get asked about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Have more questions than what's listed here? Always feel free to contact us or to schedule an appointment with one of our licensed therapists.
Can CBT be used along with other types of therapy?
Yes, and at Ott Counseling, it often is. Many of our therapists incorporate CBT with other approaches that they specialize in. These may include therapies like mindfulness-based stress reduction, progressive counting, brainspotting, or other options. Our goal is always to build a treatment plan that is in line with your challenges and goals.
What does a typical CBT session look like?
Cognitive behavior therapy sessions are both conversational and collaborative. You and your therapist will work together to identify key thought patterns, explore how they may be affecting your feelings and behavior, and then ultimately develop tools to shift unhelpful cycles.
How long does CBT typically take to see results?
With the help of cognitive behavior therapy, some clients begin noticing changes within just a few weeks. Other individuals may benefit from a longer process. It ultimately depends on your goals and what you're working through. With that being said, CBT is often considered a shorter-term, results-focused therapy.
Is cognitive behavior therapy only for anxiety or depression?
Not at all - CBT can help support healing from several challenges including OCD, trauma, chronic stress, self-esteem issues, and more. It is a flexible therapy that adapts to many life challenges, making it a therapy our therapists often incorporate into a customized treatment plan for your needs.
Do you offer CBT for children or teens?
Yes! Our therapists offer cognitive behavior therapy in age-appropriate ways for kids and teens. We additionally offer therapists that specialize in these age groups, allowing for a customized and specialized approach for our younger clients. We use games, art, storytelling, & other therapy methods to support younger clients, and help them build emotional awareness and confidence.
Will I get homework from my cognitive behavior therapy sessions?
Sometimes! Cognitive behavior therapy often includes small, manageable tasks between sessions - like journaling or practicing a new skill - to help you apply what you’re learning in real life. This helps you create healthy habits that are therapy based and allows your therapist to get feedback from your real life experiences to further customize your therapy.
How do I know if CBT is the right fit for me?
If you’re curious about how your thoughts and patterns affect your mood or behavior, cognitive behavior therapy might be a great option. This therapy option is something that we can discuss more thoroughly during an initial consultation to determine if it is a good fit for your concerns and ultimate goals for therapy.
Is CBT offered in-person or virtually?
Both! Ott Counseling provides in-person cognitive behavior therapy sessions in our Buffalo office, as well as virtual therapy for clients across Buffalo and other parts of Western New York. We are able to practice and offer teletherapy for clients based anywhere in the state of New York.
I’ve tried therapy before and didn’t feel progress. Should I still consider CBT?
Definitely - Cognitive behavior therapy is structured and skill-focused, which can often feel very different from open-ended talk therapy. It might be exactly the change you’re looking for. You can always give us a call to get your questions answered or to schedule an appointment with one of our therapists!
What kind of issues can cognitive behavior therapy help with in everyday life?
Cognitive behavior therapy can help you understand your own patterns, and help you respond to the stresses of life in healthier, more productive ways. These life stresses may include work stress, parenting struggles, social anxiety, perfectionism & more.

A Little Client Love
Ott Counseling has, without mincing words, put in more time, effort, and energy into my mental health above and beyond any other therapist I have seen in decades. Patient, evidence-based, and extremely up-to-date on the latest therapy modalities and research. Would, quite literally, not be here to write this review had it not been for this practice and the people in it.
I have been meeting with [my therapist] and I am REALLY happy with how that's going as well. He is WONDERFUL so far. He is super attentive, empathetic and I have found myself saying 'Exactly!' multiple times. He really seems to get me.
I hope you know how much you helped me through a very tough time. I wish you and Ott Counseling all of the best!
I may never be able to find the words to tell you just how much you saved me, my marriage, and my faith in myself.
You helped me more than you can ever know. You saved our lives quite literally and I can never repay you except to tell you just how much you did for my son and I.
XXXX just loved [Ott Counseling]. She was super nervous all day yesterday and told us it would be a one and done thing. She said (before the appointment) even if she ever did do it again, it would be virtual. Well, she came out of the room and said she WOULD be doing it again, AND she wanted to do it in person lol. She was bummed she has to wait so long until her next appointment. It sounds like she felt very comfortable opening up to [her].
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING THE FIRST POSITIVE PERSON IN MY LIFE!
Of all of the people in my life who have helped me, you made the biggest difference. You repeatedly supported + uplifted me. Thank you.
