Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is a transformative, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal by accessing and loving their protective and wounded inner parts. IFS practitioners believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing. Just like members of a family, inner parts are forced from their valuable states into extreme roles within us. IFS focuses on supporting clients in healing attachment wounds associated with PTSD and early childhood neglect and abuse.

What is Internal Family Systems?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapy model that helps people better understand the complex emotional parts within themselves. It’s based on the idea that we all have multiple “parts” or subpersonalities - like an inner critic, a protector, or a wounded child - that influence how we think, feel, and behave. In IFS, instead of trying to suppress or eliminate these parts, the goal is to build a relationship with them from a grounded place called the “Self,” which is calm, compassionate, and curious. This inner work helps reduce internal conflict and allows people to move toward healing, clarity, and greater emotional balance. IFS is widely used for trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues.
What Age are your Clients?
At Ott Counseling, Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is offered to older teens and adults. It's especially helpful for individuals ready to explore their internal emotional landscape and work through trauma, self-esteem challenges, anxiety, and relationship issues in a deep and reflective way. While IFS can be adapted for use with younger clients in some settings, our therapists typically use it with clients age 16 and older.

Is Internal Family Systems Right For Me?
Here are a few of the questions that we frequently get asked about Internal Family Systems. Curious if this therapy might be helpful for you? Always feel free to contact us with additional questions or to schedule an appointment with one of our licensed therapists.
What exactly is Internal Family Systems therapy?
IFS is a structured, evidence-based approach that our therapists use to help you explore and understand the different personalities within yourself - like the inner critic, the protector, or the wounded child. Often used in conjunction with other therapies, this can help support healing and harmony within yourself.
Can IFS therapy help with childhood trauma?
Yes. IFS can be particularly effective for healing wounds from early life experiences and building a compassionate connection with the parts of you that were impacted.
What ages do you work with using IFS at Ott Counseling?
We offer IFS therapy for older teens, adults, and older adults throughout Buffalo and Western New York. This therapy can be offered both in-person in our Buffalo office, as well as virtually for anyone residing in New York State.
Is IFS combined with other therapy approaches?
Yes! At Ott Counseling, we often blend IFS with other modalities like EMDR, CBT, and mindfulness-based therapies to tailor treatment for each client’s unique needs.
What does a typical IFS session look like?
Sessions often involve guided internal dialogue, checking in with different parts of yourself, and working toward healing the parts that carry pain, fear, or shame. Every session looks a little different. Interested in learning more about this therapy? Always feel free to contact us with your questions or to book an appointment!
How long does IFS therapy usually take to be effective?
Your length of treatment is always based on your individual needs. Some clients notice meaningful shifts within a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support depending on their goals.
Can IFS help if I’ve tried therapy before and not had the results I was hoping for?
Many clients come to IFS after other approaches haven’t worked. The focus on internal parts and deep emotional insight can create breakthroughs when other methods have fallen short.
Can IFS be a good fit for anxiety or depression?
Yes. IFS can be a powerful way to understand and shift the internal patterns contributing to anxiety or depression, especially if those patterns stem from past emotional pain.
Where do you offer Internal Family Systems therapy?
Our therapists offer IFS therapy as well as many other modalities right in our Buffalo office for in-person sessions. We also offer virtual appointment for anyone in the state of New York.

A Little Client Love
Ott Counseling has, without mincing words, put in more time, effort, and energy into my mental health above and beyond any other therapist I have seen in decades. Patient, evidence-based, and extremely up-to-date on the latest therapy modalities and research. Would, quite literally, not be here to write this review had it not been for this practice and the people in it.
I have been meeting with [my therapist] and I am REALLY happy with how that's going as well. He is WONDERFUL so far. He is super attentive, empathetic and I have found myself saying 'Exactly!' multiple times. He really seems to get me.
I hope you know how much you helped me through a very tough time. I wish you and Ott Counseling all of the best!
I may never be able to find the words to tell you just how much you saved me, my marriage, and my faith in myself.
You helped me more than you can ever know. You saved our lives quite literally and I can never repay you except to tell you just how much you did for my son and I.
XXXX just loved [Ott Counseling]. She was super nervous all day yesterday and told us it would be a one and done thing. She said (before the appointment) even if she ever did do it again, it would be virtual. Well, she came out of the room and said she WOULD be doing it again, AND she wanted to do it in person lol. She was bummed she has to wait so long until her next appointment. It sounds like she felt very comfortable opening up to [her].
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING THE FIRST POSITIVE PERSON IN MY LIFE!
Of all of the people in my life who have helped me, you made the biggest difference. You repeatedly supported + uplifted me. Thank you.
