What are Creative & Body-Based Interventions?

Creative and body-based interventions are approaches that bring the body into the healing process - not just the mind. At Ott Counseling, these may include music therapy, expressive arts, mindful movement, and breathwork to support emotional processing and nervous system regulation. These options are especially helpful for people who feel stuck in talk therapy or who have experienced trauma that words alone can’t reach. By engaging with the body and creative expression, clients often uncover new insights, release stored stress, and feel more connected to themselves. These methods can be used alone or alongside traditional therapy to customize your treatment.

Are Creative & Body-Based Interventions  Right For Me?

  • Do I need to be creative or talented for this type of therapy to work?

    Not at all! These therapies are about expression and healing, not performance. They’re designed to support you, even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush or an instrument before.

  • What kinds of body-based therapies do you use at Ott Counseling?

    We offer movement, yoga (including prenatal), psychosomatic bodywork, and more - always tailored to your needs and comfort level, and in conjunction with other more traditional therapy methods as well!

  • Do kids actually respond to these types of therapy?

    Yes! Many kids naturally express themselves through movement, play, or creativity. These therapies give them a safe way to explore emotions without relying on words - particularly younger children who may not have developed a strong ability to communicate their needs and emotions.

  • Can this be part of my regular therapy sessions, or is it a separate service?

    We offer creative and body-based sessions separately from other therapies, however they can be used as a part of a whole-person approach in someone's treatment. Your therapist may suggest that you attend a creative session as a part of your current therapy, or you may choose to attend a session on your own! These creative sessions can be used in just that way - Creatively!

  • Is this only for trauma work?

    Not at all. While creative & body-based interventions can be great tool for trauma healing, we also use it for anxiety, chronic stress, emotional overwhelm, and even recovery from burnout.

  • Does this involve touch or physical contact?

    No touch is ever used without full discussion and consent. Most interventions are non-contact and focus on mindful movement or expressive techniques.

  • What if I feel awkward moving or doing something creative in front of someone?

    That’s completely normal! Sessions are paced with care, and you’ll never be pushed into anything that doesn’t feel right for you. The point of these sessions isn't to do every movement perfectly - It's often about emotional release, breathwork, meditation, and not just having the perfect pose. 

  • Is this something available for adults, or just children?

    Creative & body-based interventions are available for both children and adults. Many adults find these therapies incredibly grounding, especially when the words just don’t feel like enough.

  • Can this therapy be combined with EMDR or talk therapy?

    Yes, at Ott Counseling our therapists often combine modalities. Creative and body-based approaches can absolutely complement EMDR, CBT, and other therapies to deepen healing and build emotional regulation tools.

  • How do I know if this approach is right for me or my child?

    We always start with a conversation. Our therapists will learn more about your goals, needs, and comfort level - and help you explore if this could be a helpful part of your healing process.

XXXX just loved [Ott Counseling]. She was super nervous all day yesterday and told us it would be a one and done thing.
