Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
MBSR therapy is a meditation therapy which is used to develop coping skills for stress management, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and additional mental, physical, and emotional health challenges. It is also integrated into preparation for trauma resolution therapies.
MBSR is a structured, evidence-based therapeutic approach that uses mindfulness meditation and gentle movement to help individuals manage stress, anxiety, pain, and other physical and emotional challenges. Our clients are encouraged to cultivate present-moment, judgement-free awareness through breathwork, body scans, and mindful attention to thoughts and sensations.

What is MBSR?
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a therapeutic approach that helps individuals build awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations through intentional practices like breathing, meditation, and mindful movement. Rather than pushing away discomfort, MBSR encourages people to sit with their experiences and respond with self-compassion and clarity. MBSR can be used to reduce the impact of chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and physical pain. At Ott Counseling, we guide clients in applying mindfulness techniques in daily life - whether that’s pausing during a moment of overwhelm or grounding themselves in the present during difficult conversations. This practice supports emotional resilience and a more balanced, less reactive way of navigating life.
What Age are your Clients?
Ott Counseling offers Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to clients across a wide range of ages. This therapy is most commonly used with teens through older adults, especially those experiencing chronic stress & anxiety. MBSR can be tailored to meet individuals where they are, emotionally and developmentally, helping them build mindfulness skills at a pace that fits them.

Is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Right For Me?
Here are a few of the questions that we frequently get asked about Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Curious if this therapy might be helpful for you? Always feel free to contact us with additional questions or to schedule an appointment with one of our licensed therapists.
What exactly is MBSR, and how is it different from regular meditation?
MBSR is a structured, evidence-based program that combines mindfulness meditation, gentle movement, and awareness practices to help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Unlike casual meditation apps, MBRS is led by a trained therapist and often integrated into a comprehensive therapy plan.
Can MBSR help with anxiety or panic attacks?
Yes! Many people find MBSR helpful for managing symptoms of anxiety, including racing thoughts and physical tension. Over time, mindfulness practices taught by MBSR can help you feel more grounded and in control.
Do I need experience with meditation or yoga to benefit from MBSR?
Not at all. Our therapists will meet you exactly where you are. Whether you’re brand new to mindfulness or already have a daily practice, we will tailor the experience to your comfort level.
Is MBSR therapy available for teens or kids?
We typically offer mindfulness-based interventions to teens and adults, though adaptations for younger children may be considered depending on the child’s needs, their willingness to participate in mindul practices, and the therapist’s approach.
What happens in a typical MBSR session at Ott Counseling?
Sessions often include guided meditation, breathing exercises, gentle movement (like mindful stretching), and time to reflect on how mindfulness is showing up in your daily life. MBSR is also often used in conjunction with other therapies that may be also implemented during your therapy session.
How does mindfulness help with chronic pain?
Mindfulness based stress reduction can change how your brain and body respond to pain and stress. Releasing stress and tension can absolutely help address chronic pain, and may complement physical therapies or other treatments that you are receiving for your chronic pain.
Is MBSR used on its own or combined with other therapies?
How long does it take to notice benefits from MBSR therapy?
Many people begin to start feeling and seeing results after just a few sessions. Long-term changes, like improved stress tolerance and emotional resilience, tend to build over time with regular practice.
Where do you offer MBSR therapy?
Ott counseling offers in-person sessions at our Buffalo office as well as virtual options for clients throughout Buffalo, Western New York, and all of New York State.
Is mindfulness therapy only for stress, or can it help with other challenges too?
While MBSR is a helpful tool for managing stress, it can also support healing from depression, trauma, anxiety, and even relationship struggles. It’s a versatile tool that complements many of our other modalities for supporting mental health.

A Little Client Love
Ott Counseling has, without mincing words, put in more time, effort, and energy into my mental health above and beyond any other therapist I have seen in decades. Patient, evidence-based, and extremely up-to-date on the latest therapy modalities and research. Would, quite literally, not be here to write this review had it not been for this practice and the people in it.
I have been meeting with [my therapist] and I am REALLY happy with how that's going as well. He is WONDERFUL so far. He is super attentive, empathetic and I have found myself saying 'Exactly!' multiple times. He really seems to get me.
I hope you know how much you helped me through a very tough time. I wish you and Ott Counseling all of the best!
I may never be able to find the words to tell you just how much you saved me, my marriage, and my faith in myself.
You helped me more than you can ever know. You saved our lives quite literally and I can never repay you except to tell you just how much you did for my son and I.
XXXX just loved [Ott Counseling]. She was super nervous all day yesterday and told us it would be a one and done thing. She said (before the appointment) even if she ever did do it again, it would be virtual. Well, she came out of the room and said she WOULD be doing it again, AND she wanted to do it in person lol. She was bummed she has to wait so long until her next appointment. It sounds like she felt very comfortable opening up to [her].
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING THE FIRST POSITIVE PERSON IN MY LIFE!
Of all of the people in my life who have helped me, you made the biggest difference. You repeatedly supported + uplifted me. Thank you.
